The idea behind GRAF/O/MANIA, an exhibition presenting the latest in Polish graphic art, has originated from the conviction that it is necessary to have a closer look at the condition of this medium in the contemporary art world. For a large group of researchers, critics and artists, the technical aspect alone has ceased to be a valid reason for tackling a particular artistic discipline, and discussing art on the basis of its division into distinct media has long been questioned as well. It seems that graphic art, a genre requiring an exceptionally arduous, multi-stage process of creation, has lost its appeal. It no longer features on the front pages of popular contemporary-art magazines, it is hard to find on mainstream art websites either, the latter being preoccupied with painting, performance and video art instead. Paradoxically, even though it has been largely ignored in artistic circulation for a longer while now, graphic art has been evolving in its own way, creating its microcosm of own discussions, competitions, awards and celebrities. Graphic art is doing fine, the question is – do we know where it really is at the moment?
